Captain So-So and Mr. Maybe

Episode #2 - The Doctor is In...sane! Or Take Two Slugs And Call Me In The Morning.

Here in part two of my Captain So-So and Mister Maybe opus, our heroes meet their first villain. I wanted Dr. Not-So-Nice to look like a crazy evil doctor and he really does. I also wanted him to be almost completely useless as a villain. Hence the cyber-slugs. Oddly enough, I realized that when you add lasers to even the slowest and most useless of creatures, they can be threatening.

This comic also contains one of my favorite lines in "Time to stamp 'expired' on your library card, dork." Since So-So and Maybe was basically a storyline offshoot from the Dane and March comics, these characters already had a voice. I didn't want to make them characters of characters, as that gets confusing for new readers. By this point I knew how both of them would sound like in their own voices, so the superhero stuff was not only fun to write, but easy.

It occured to me as I was working on this that Superheroes always seem to jump right up when they get their powers and start fighting crime. How the hell do they know what to do? Christ, it takes me at least 10 minutes to learn how to play any new videogames, and I've been playing games for over a decade. I wanted to show that these guys clearly have no idea what they're doing. Someday I'd like to do a superhero training comic. Maybe after the third arc.
